Whatever you think makes your marketing successful is probably ruining it.
If you ever tried to make your ads “original” for example, chances are you made them less effective and wasted money.
For your marketing to bring more customers, it must be centered around one thing that most businesses overlook…
… let’s use an example from the dating world to explain this:
Stop Trying To Impress Her!
Imagine you’re approaching a woman… How would you make her want to avoid a conversation with you?
We've all had it happen to us as kids when we wanted to impress a girl so we tried to show we were “cool”...
…the girl usually doesn't care, just like your customers don’t care.
Companies tend to talk about their product/services to impress customers, they talk about their knowledge and experience… and this goes on until the customers run away.
No one cares when we talk about ourselves.
And If you want to attract dozens of new customers every month, make sure your marketing talks nothing but…
…the HOLE.
Sell the hole, not the drill
In 2001, Apple introduced the MP3 player and made millions of people pull out their credit cards and buy.
Which was strange because their marketing campaign didn’t talk about the product at all.
Apple didn’t say anything like:
“Our MP3 Player has 126 GB”
“Our MP3 player has the most advanced sound technology in the world”
No.
They said one sentence that people remember to this day:
“1,000 Songs In Your Pocket”
See the difference?
This is exactly the idea of the sentence - “sell the hole, not the drill”.
People don’t purchase products for the sake of the product, they buy it to solve a problem/fulfill a need.
Just like you don’t buy a drill for the sake of buying a drill; you buy it because you need to make a hole in your wall.
So that’s precisely what your marketing efforts should focus on… your customers’ problem/need, rather than your product.
