The Pareto Principle states that 20% of content online gets 80% of the views.
Wanna know what separates the top from the rest?
Flow.
Most writing flows like a dry water slide.
It’s painful to read. You get stuck every two seconds. And by the time you reach the end you’re almost dead.
Luckily there’s a simple trick to fix your flow.
It’s called the “stumble test” and here’s how it works:
Use The Stumble Test To Fix Your Writing
The stumble test is battle-tested. Proven. It works every single time and makes your writing smooth as butter.
Take a look at this sentence:
“I have always been taught that it is better to get dressed formally for business meetings rather than appearing casual.”
Or this one:
“The things which can be conducted from the test will serve as a giant step towards the creation of a cure for cancer.”
See the problem with them?
They’re hard to skim. Make you stumble.
Imagine reading a whole a paragraph like this:
A bag of money is offered to the politician, which gets declined by him due to his good conscience. “the bag should not be taken by me”, he claims. “The realization that I traded the trust of my people for a bag of money would have crushed me.”
If you made it through all that without saying HELL NO. You may be immune to pain. Get your nervous system checked because it’s a dangerous condition.
Now how do we fix these horrible sentences?
Very simple.
Easiest Way To Improve Your Flow
So let’s start with the first sentence:
“I learned it’s better to dress formally for business meetings than casually.”
Next one:
“The test’s conclusions are a giant step towards curing cancer.”
Last one:
“.”
Sorry, I’m not gonna try to fix that paragraph. It’s too far gone.
But do you see what I did with the first sentences?
I removed all the weak, stilted passive language. And replaced it with an active voice.
That’s how we make our writing smooth.
Eliminate Passive Language Once And For All
Let’s have a bit more sympathy for our readers. Spare them from long, boring paragraphs.
Use the stumble detector to analyze your content. See where it gets lengthy, complicated, passive. Take all that fat and replace it with a strong active voice.
